Tasmania has more good snorkelling than any one person could ever map. If you know a spot that is not in the Snorkelling Guide yet — a reef your local club dives, a rock pool you always check on a low tide, a beach entry only the neighbours know about — you can add it yourself.

You do not need to be a marine biologist or a professional photographer. If you can describe what is there and roughly what to expect, that is enough to get a suggestion started.

In short: create a member account, then use the Suggest a Snorkelling Location form on your dashboard. Our team reviews every submission before it goes live. If you would like to help review submissions and add locations directly, get in touch about becoming a volunteer.

1. Create a member account

Suggestions are tied to a member account, so we know who to follow up with if we have questions and where to credit the find. Request an account and verify your email address. An administrator reviews each new request, and you will get an email letting you know the outcome. If you already have an account, sign in and skip ahead.

2. Suggest the location from your dashboard

Once you are signed in, open Suggest a Snorkelling Location from your account menu. The form is grouped into a few sections:

  • Location details — the site's name, its region, an optional address or access point, and its coordinates. If you are not sure of the exact latitude and longitude, right-click the spot on Google Maps and the coordinates are the first thing in the menu that appears.
  • Conditions — a difficulty rating, a depth range, the entry type, the best season to visit, typical visibility and water temperature. Leave anything blank you are unsure of; it can always be filled in later.
  • What to see and practical notes — the kelp, fish, invertebrates or other life worth looking for, plus parking, facilities, gear notes and anything about access or safety a first-time visitor should know.
  • Photos or video — links to any images or footage you have, if you have them. Not required, but they make a listing far more useful once it is published.

Fill in as much as you comfortably can. A short, accurate description beats a long guess, and the more detail you provide the faster we can check and approve it.

3. What happens after you submit it

Every suggestion is reviewed by our team before anything goes public — nothing you submit appears on the site automatically. We check the details, tidy up the wording where needed, and either publish it to the Snorkelling Guide or come back to you if we need more information.

You can track the status of everything you have submitted from My Suggestions, which shows each one as pending, approved or declined.

4. Want to help build the guide yourself?

If you find yourself wanting to add more than the odd site here and there, we would love the help. Volunteers with editing access can add and publish snorkelling locations directly, without waiting on a review each time — along with the same access across species pages, locations and surveys.

This is not a paid role. It is for people with a genuine interest in Tasmania's coast and marine life who want to put some time into a resource the whole community uses. Have a look at Become a Volunteer for what is involved, then reach out through the contact page and tell us a bit about yourself. All skill levels are welcome — local knowledge and care with detail matter far more than experience.

What it costs

Nothing. There is no fee to suggest a location, no fee to browse the guide, and nothing held back behind a paid tier. Our Tasmania is a volunteer site, kept going by people sharing what they know, and it stays that way.

Every location in the guide started as someone's suggestion. If you have a favourite spot the next person should know about, add it now, or browse the Snorkelling Guide to see what is there already.

Share observations, corrections, field notes, or general feedback.
