This Project Needs You
Our Tasmania is an independent, passion-driven project. There is no team behind it — just one person with a camera, a notebook, and a deep interest in Tasmanian nature. Building a resource like this takes an enormous amount of time, effort, and ongoing cost. Any help you can offer — whether that is your knowledge, your time, or a small financial contribution — makes a genuine difference to what this site can become.
There are three main ways you can get involved, outlined below. Every contribution no matter how small is appreciated and goes directly toward making this a better resource for everyone who loves Tasmania's natural world.
Contribute Species Information
The species guide is the heart of this site, but building it out is slow work. There are hundreds of species found in Tasmania that are yet to have a page, and many existing pages that could be significantly improved with better descriptions, additional photographs, or more accurate range data.
If you have knowledge of a particular species — whether you are a naturalist, researcher, photographer, or just someone who pays close attention on their walks — that knowledge is valuable here. Contributions can take many forms:
- Written descriptions, identification notes, or behavioural observations for species pages.
- Photographs of species in the field for use on the site.
- Corrections or additions to existing species entries.
- References to published literature or resources that would improve the accuracy of a page.
Participate in Surveys & Share Sighting Data
Location-based surveys are a key part of building a picture of where species are found across Tasmania. If you are out in the field and recording sightings — whether through iNaturalist, a personal log, or your own surveys — that data can help build out the location and range information on this site.
Even a simple record of what you saw, where, and when is useful. You can share sighting data or survey results by getting in touch directly, and any contribution will be properly attributed.

Running a site like this is not free. Between web hosting, domain registration, storage for images and data, security certificates, and the various tools and services needed to keep everything running reliably, the ongoing costs add up quickly. This is funded entirely out of pocket with no advertising, no sponsorship, and no external funding.

As this site grows, so does the need for people to help maintain and expand it. Volunteer moderators play an important role in keeping the content accurate, up to date, and well-structured. This is not a paid role — it is for people who have a genuine interest in Tasmanian nature and want to contribute something meaningful to a long-term community resource.
What moderating involves:
- Helping research and write new species pages using the established page format and style guidelines.
- Reviewing and updating existing pages when taxonomy, range data, or other information changes.
- Checking submitted data and photographs for accuracy before they go live on the site.
- Helping respond to community-submitted corrections and additions.
- Assisting with survey data entry and location page updates.
Moderators are given access to the site's content management tools and work at their own pace. There is no minimum commitment required — any time you can give is useful. Full guidance and templates are provided so you do not need prior experience with the site to get started.
