A motttled greyish ling, with prominent dark spots or blotches, broadly banded or spotted pectoral fins, pale pelvic fins, and blackish dorsal, anal and caudal fins with a narrow margin. Large adults are almost black.

To id this species look at the shape of the body the markings although ,ay be absent in larger fish and the whiskers under the bottom jaw
