Lampshells superficially resemble, but are not related to, bivalve molluscs. They have upper and lower valves (shells) and a horny stalk (pedicle) that is used to fix them to the substrate. The pedicle projects from a hole (foramen) in the lower valve. The shape of the lower valve resembles an ancient Roman lamp
