Information Species Confusion

There are a couple of species within this genus and identification is confusing as features do seem to overlap and statements from many sources indicate more work is needed to verify species

S. comosus can vary quite a bit in shape and thickness. Thicker, more robust plants are usually found in deeper water on exposed coasts, while slimmer forms are more common in shallower, more sheltered areas, often where there is some water movement.

The length of the reproductive structures can also vary. They tend to grow longer as the plant gets older, and their size can also be affected by local environmental conditions.
